It was raining money near Vrindavan's Banke Bihari temple and the rain-maker was a monkey.

There are over 10,000 monkeys in Mathura disctrict and they have become a nuisance for the residents and tourists alike. One such simian stole a purse of a devotee near Banke*Bihari temple in Vrindavan and threw away Rs 500 notes on the streets.

According to an English daily, Hemvati Sonkar, a 50-year-old woman from Borivali, Mumbai was on a trip with her family to Agra, Mathura, and Vrindavan. She was carrying Rs 1.5 lakh cash with her.

The monkey snatched her purse and sat atop a ledge. It took out the bundle of cash and started waving it. Suddenly it flung them in the air and passerby, kids, beggars rushed around to collect all they can.

Daughter of Ms Sonkar lost her mobile in the chaos, which was sticking out of her back-pocket, while helping her mother collect the cash.

A devotee regular at the temple said that one of a temple worker's son got rich by Rs 30,000!

This kind of monkey menace has become very common in Vrindavan. They are known to steal cameras, phones, glasses. Even President Pranab Mukherjee was warned on his visit to Vrindavan last November.
