Singapore rower Saiyidah Aisyah, 25, has come in first in the SEA Games individual 2000m rowing race, winning the nation-state's first-ever individual gold medal in the sport.
She rowed a time of 8:08:94 in the 2km lightweight single sculls race, gaining a strong two-second victory over Indonesia's Maryam Makdalena Daimoi, who clocked in a time of 8:10:47.
Aisyah is Singapore's only competitive female rower and also its sole representative at the Games. Her historic victory for the nation is even sweeter given that she has been funding her own training and competition expenses throughout this year and has been training solo since its 2011 edition.
Previously, the student development manager at Ngee Ann Polytechnic attained three bronze medals over the past two Games, and prior to that, snagged a third-place finish at the 2010 Asia Cup.
More recently, she won a silver medal at the Southeast Asian rowing championships in May, and reached an overall 17th ranking at the world championships in Korea in August.
