82 arrested in Geylang for gambling, cigarette peddling and other offences

SINGAPORE - A total of 82 people were arrested in a seven-day multi-agency operation in Geylang, with most of them arrested for gambling, among other offences.

The 79 men and three women were arrested in an operation led by Bedok Police Division that began last Tuesday and ended on Monday (Nov 6).

The operation, which was supported by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, Singapore Customs, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, Central Narcotics Bureau and Health Sciences Authority, scoured streets and hotels in Geylang.

Most of the men arrested were caught for gambling.

Sixty-five of them, aged between 16 and 68, were nabbed for promoting public gaming, gaming in public, possessing offensive weapons, drug-related offences and offences under the Immigration Act.

Punishment for these operators are not harsh enough. Just fucking rotan their ass and send back to their countries by sampans....

They do things openly in public. Really "no government".

Correct. Should increase number of rotan. Dont increase length in jail. Waste tax payers money.

What do you expect them to do after getting out from jail?

Go universities take up some engineering courses and become an engineer afterwards?

Thats why is a waste of taxpayers money. Foreigners criminals ship back to their origin countries. Locals give some chance.

Missed those days when the local group still have control over Geylang. More systematic and less rowdy. Nowadays our country is fucked upside down by foreign groups and Government is just sitting there collecting $$$.

Yes, foreign criminals are much easier to be dealt with -- just shipped them back. But what about those locals? Running gambling dens, becoming ah-long, OKT... these are all the skills they know. I feel that, to some extents, the government needs to close one eye.

Nevertheless, they are not serial killers or rapists... they just do some "not-so-legal" business. Give them a break.
