The loss of ability to achieve an erection is a gradual process in most cases.
It starts off as you describe (loss of hardness) and if the underlying cause is not addressed it could progress to the point where it is no longer rigid enough to achieve penetration.
This is why the primary cause needs to be determined. If the tiny capillaries required to transport blood to the penis are no longer functioning as they should a medical professional needs to determine why this is so. It points to issues such as diabetes, high cholesterol levels, hypertension etc.
On the other hand if your cardiovascular system is fine the issue could be hormonal (drop in testosterone levels) or there could be some mechanism which is interfering with NO (Nitric Oxide) production which is required as part of the process for achieving an erection eg the excessive use of mouthwash can cause ED!
Viagra will definitely help but it does not cure the root cause. It's like taking panadol for a brain tumor. It reduces the pain but it does nothing to cure the source of the problem.
