I speak basic conversational Japanese, and I've gotten into places where people have said they have trouble entering (maybe cause I can pass as Japanese until I open my mouth, and when I open my mouth I show I can atleast speak basic Japanese).
I don't think you'll get scammed there. Scams usually happen with the touts (not all).

For the Japanese part... I have no comments on your experience but... Most people would probably be exposed when going through the different routines. + the providers will ask questions for the service part which will force you to talk.

I think shops will be ok if you have someone vouch for you, even if you're foreigner.
