LOL - Mexico city is about 3-1/2 hours by flight from Los Angeles next to Tijuana. It's two time zones and about 2,500 KM away!

Early 2000's I used to regularly go there but even then it was already a very dangerous place. Each of the 50 staff at my office there had gotten robbed at gun point at least once, gas stations have guards with bullet proof vests and sub-machine guns to protect the customers when they fill gas, cars regularly do NOT stop at red lights after dusk for fear of being robbed whilst stopping etc.

So be very careful especially if you do monger - I only went around with my office manager who has a body-guard, and be careful getting into taxis from the street - many will kidnap and rob you. Nightlife is more the civvie action type and I only got taken to "Gentlemen's clubs" every time I wanted P4P - not cheap! Polanco, Zona Rosa etc are night areas but DF (Distrito Federale - which is how the locals refer to their city) is huge.

And you'll get headaches from the high altitude/thin air and make sure you bring some warm clothing.
