[QUOTE=localbest;11441026]Maybe you are referring to the Sharia law (Islamic law) in banda Aceh, Indonesia.

In Aceh province which is the northern end of Sumatra where the tsunami striked is the only place with very strict Islamic law in Indonesia. Example like If commit adultery, the couple will be tied up and kena throw stone by the public as a form of punishment.

Ya, not surprising to hear that. Because in Singapore some of the Indonesian maid told me that they do consume pork too as they just follow what their employer eats.

In Singapore and bolehland, the malays are born as muslim, they are not allowed to change their religion. Even if they should marry with a non-muslim, be it a man or a woman, their spouse-to-be have to be converted to muslim.

As for Indonesian Javanese/Sudanese/Malays/minangkabau/bugis/madurese/etc they are born muslim but they can choose their religion when they grow up. I know of a maid from java tengah who used to be a muslim and later she convert into a Christian. Freedom of religion is commonly seen in Indonesia.

According to my encounter, 7th month seems to be a low-season for Sporean to cheong.

As for Msian, they are generally more pantang or superstitious so will try to avoid the streets if possible and their preferred destination is balai as it is nearer to malaysia when they depart from Kukup or puteri harbour in jb and is cheaper too.

In last few decade in china, the Chinese people were taught and "brainwash" with communist idea and way of life. Communism do not believe in religion, that is why most of the Chinese in china especially the central and northern Chinese even the southern Chinese do not believe in the 7th month god & ghost. (神鬼).

As Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia/Thailand/Philippine/Hong Kong/ Taiwan overseas Chinese like our ancestors originate from southern china before the communism, they brought with them to southeast asia all these olden days beliefs and practices.

Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar may not have 7th month kind of thing. However in Vietnam not so sure as they have a strong cultural link with China. The Vietnamese cewek or known as the Pho are more of a yellow skin than brown sugar. They have the almost same face feature and skin colour as the Chinese and that is why sometime they can be mistaken as PRC cewek.

But what i see quite a few times that Indonesian themselves (non-chinese) are consuming pork...quite surprising when i seen a couple of girls i booked in Batam over my trips takes Bak Kut Teh with me in Batam. i don't see Malaysian malays or Sillypore Malays taking pork tho. Then again with these points said,Indonesia Muslim isn't as strict as the Muslim in Malaysia.

Can i safely say that during 7th Month,Batam is also considered low peak season to cheong as less Malaysia & Sillypore chinese visit it? If that were the case,i may consider a visit during the 7th month,hehehe....i don't like crowded.

Thx for sharing,bro...I am relative quite surprise that Most parts of China do not have celebrate 7th Month and some even do not know about the season. Taiwan ,HK,Malaysia and Sillypore seems to have more Chinese knowing and celebrating the Ghost month.

Since this topic has been brought up here,i cant help wondering if Chinese in wetnam, cambodia or even laos have this 7th month thingy...? (i do understand it's an out of topic question here,so no obligation to reply me)

...
Sometimes off thread abit would be more interesting like topics on Indonesia elections, some information on Dolly Red light district in Jarkata, 7th month Hungry Ghost festival in Batam, etc….. so that it wouldn’t be so boring reading the same questions and answers few thousands of times (sorry to newbie bros, no offence).

Yes correct. The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated for a month. And the festival is quite colourful with all type of offering for praying like ‘Black Gold’ (黑金) for Prosperity, ‘Rice Pot’ (米桶) for Abundant, ‘Fortune Prayer Pot' (发财炉) for Fortune, etc where the biting (竞标) can go up to at least 50 of thousands of Sing dollars…………

Hungry Ghost Festival is commonly celebrated in Sillypore but in Batam, for so many years I cheong during the ghost month. I barely see anyone is praying on the road side or any feeling that the Chinese family is praying when I stayed at a rented house where the area are mostly chinese. I only see praying in temples when I visited but I do not know whether they are praying for the Hungry Ghost…..

Well, I need to check it out and be more observance this coming ghost month when I cheong in Batam. But nowadays, young Sillyporean do not believe in the Hungry Ghost Festival or ‘pantang’. So it made no different to them for cheonging…..

I know the Muslim religion and the malay culture too. But it is even more interesting to learn more on how the Indonesia people practice their religion in the different way from the explanation given by good self bros here. A lesson I have learn.

I happened to book a gal from Dynasty 99 and she also ate pork when we go out for dinner together. She said that her Chinese Sillyporean tamu (guest) told her that by eating pork, it can wards off the evil spirit and the chants of the malay Bomoh who is putting a spell on her if anyone try to do harm to her. She said that Malay/Muslim is very afraid of pork or pig, so the Malay/Muslin spirit or evil spell would not dare to go into the body or near to that person who consume pork. It is really amusing and I really had a good laugh on that. I wonder any of our Senior Bro here trying to bluff her into eating pork…. Hehehe (Joking)

No offence is intended to any of our malay/muslim bros here if any. Just a sincere comments on what I encounter and share the experience on this topic.

Salute to bro nono for answering every single question that put forward to him. You are a very kind soul bro. Talk about coffee you also can…. Hahaha Thumb up!
