To put it simply

Affiliate Marketing (AM) is basically marketing someone else's products and make a commission from the referral. The products can be physical products, electronic products or services.

One of the biggest affiliate program is Amazon.

Basically, referring a customer to amazon and if the customer buys, you get a commission. You can create a website to market the products, for example. Creating the website is easy. Not difficult. THis is where the problem lies. Many people believes that they can just wait for customer to come and buy, and they sit back and collect comm. Sorry, not how it works. Creating a website doesn't guarantee visitors to your website. There are plenty of websites out there. If your website is not ranked on the first page of google search, then no one is going to find your website. Of course, there is pay-per-click but this is a different story and is very expensive marketing campaign.

Basically an affiliate marketers role is to drive customers to buy the product. website is one way, social media is another so are mailers, etc.
