Workers to join next anti-Ahok rally on Dec. 2

As several Islamic organizations work to recruit more participants, the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) is set to join the next planned rally.

Scheduled for Dec. 2, the rally aims to call for the arrest of incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who had been named a suspect in an alleged blasphemy case.

KSPI chairman Said Iqbal said workers planned to go on strike and join the Dec. 2 rally in protest of the Jakarta administration’s minimum wage policy recently imposed in the city.

“Just imagine, the minimum wage for Jakarta is set at Rp 3.3 million [US$246.82] next year, equal to this year's minimum wage in a ‘small city’, namely Karawang [in West Java]," he said on Friday.

Iqbal further said that in the rally, the workers wanted to express their disappointment over Ahok's allegedly blasphemous remarks and the forced evictions conducted under his leadership.

“Around 500,000 workers in Greater Jakarta areas will join the peaceful rally," he claimed.

Ahok triggered anger among Muslims in Indonesia when he cited a Quranic verse in his speech in front of local residents in Thousand Islands regency last September. The National Police subsequently named Ahok a suspect for his remarks and issued a travel ban that prevented him from going overseas.

The Movement of Indonesian Council Edict Supporters (GNPF MUI) announced on Friday that it would carry out a peaceful rally demanding that the police arrest Ahok, who is currently seeking his second term of office in next year’s Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Rescuers recover 54 bodies of boat accident in Batam

Batam (ANTARA News) - The joint rescue team on Friday recovered the bodies of 54 passengers of a boat which sank on Batam waters of Riau Province on Wednesday while transporting Indonesian migrant workers.

"Thirty-three bodies were recovered during the search operations till 11:00 am on Friday. A total of 54 bodies have been found since Wednesday," Chief of Riau Islands Police Office Brigadier General Sam Budigusdian said here on Friday.

The 33 bodies found on Friday included 29 men, three women and a girl child.

Meanwhile, the search on November 2 managed to recover 18 bodies, which included seven men, 10 women and a seven-month old female infant.

On November 3, the team found three bodies.

As many as 12 bodies out of the 54 have been identified in Bhayangkara Police Hospital of Riau Islands.

The joint Search and Rescue Team had managed to evacuate 41 survivors, comprising 39 migrant workers and two ship crew members, from the boat accident.

"According to information given by the survivors, there were 95 passengers in total and six passengers were still missing," Budigusdian said.

The boat transporting illegal Indonesian migrant workers capsized and sank after being hit by a big wave on Batam waters at dawn of Wednesday.

Police receive info of another anti-Ahok protest being planned for November 25

The November 4 protest was triggered by accusations that Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama insulted Islam by criticising opponents who used Koranic references to attack him

It has been less than a week since Jakarta saw a massive protest against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for his alleged blasphemy against the Quran, but police say there is already information circulating about another protest planned for November 25.

“There is already information [about a protest] but we will anticipate it,” said National Police Chief Tito Karnavian yesterday as quoted by Merdeka.

Tito said the government had not yet received any formal request for permission to hold the protest and he did not disclose who might be organizing it. The November 4 protest was initiated by a coalition of hardline Islamic groups including the Islamic Defenders Front.

Presumably any further protests would largely depend on the outcome of the investigation into Governor Ahok’s supposed blasphemy. The police have promised to process the case with an unprecedented level of transparency and various officials have promised that they would reach a conclusion within the next week and a half.

If Ahok were to be found to be innocent of the blasphemy charges then it is very likely that there would be some further protests but whether they would approach the size of the November 4 protest is hard to anticipate now.

Police ‘Pen Pineapple’ parody tells kids to pick gorengan instead of crystal meth

If you have somehow not been on the internet at all for the last month, you may have missed the latest musical meme to take over the intertubes - the headscratchingly catchy “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” music video by Piko-Taro, the alter-ego of Japanese professional comedian Kosaka Daimaoh.

We have spared you the countless Indonesian parodies of PPAP up until now, but this one from the Balikpapan Police force was too good not to share (1,800 people have already shared it).

What is brilliant about this parody is its subversion and critique of the PPAP trans-binary - rather than attempting to squeeze together the es cendol and the beer to make es cendol beer, the dancing police officer instead rejects the beer and chooses only the es cendol.

The same goes for the gorengan (fried stuff) and narkoba (drugs). Instead of pressing them together into narkoba goreng, he chooses only the gorengan, thus achieving a state on kenyang (fullness).

The video ends with several more police officers telling the audience to stop stop stop narkoba and then the police chief telling us to not consume drugs or alcohol because they will destroy your health and are expensive. Instead, he advises eating es cendol and gorengan.

Some people might argue that videos like this could actually drive the public to try more drugs and alcohol, but we found it’s message very persuasive and you can be assured that the next time somebody asks us to choose between crispy fried gorengan or crystal meth, we will make the right choice.
