No more rallies against Ahok: Jokowi
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo says he expects to see no more rallies over inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s alleged blasphemy. “We hope there are no more demonstrations. They are a waste of energy,” Jokowi said in front of a meeting of Muslim scholars from the National Awakening Party in Ancol, North Jakarta, on Saturday as reported by tribunnews.com. Jokowi reiterated that he was not taking Ahok’s side, but only wished to let law enforcement bodies handle the case. “Since the beginning I have said that I would not intervene in any legal issues. Let the law enforcement personnel handle it,” the president said. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims staged a demonstration in front of the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Nov. 4, demanding that the government jail Ahok for blasphemy. The rally ended in violence with two cars set on fire. Ahok has repeatedly apologized and said he never intended to insult Islam and the Quran during a speech he gave in the Thousand Islands regency. The accusations began after an edited video of his speech there went viral last month. |

Several injured in a church explosion in Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia - In a tragic incident, several children were wounded after an explosion rocked a church on Borneo Island in Indonesia during a Sunday service, the Indonesian police said. The bombing is said to have also caused heavy damage to the vehicles at the parking lot of the Oikumene Church in Samarinda. As per the reports, a man passing on his motorbike threw a Molotov cocktail that resulted in the explosion. Local police spokesman Lt. Col. Fajar Setiawan said, “The man passed by the church and threw what we suspected was low-explosive cocktail bombs, causing light injuries on four children who were playing there.” Setiawan informed that the injured kids were immediately rushed to a hospital and were being treated there. In the aftermath of the ill-fated occurrence, the police spokesman said that the culprit, who wore a t-shirt with the word ‘jihad’ adorned on it, was later arrested by the police and is currently being investigated in relation to the incident. However, the motive behind the attack is still unknown to the authorities. This is the second such incident to have targeted the world’s most populous Muslim country in the last four months. In August this year, an unsuccessful suicide bombing took place at the church, during the Sunday mass. However, the suicide bomber managed to injure the priest before being arrested. |
