Hungry Ghost Festival in Medan
Ethnic-Chinese Indonesians in Medan, North Sumatra, celebrated the “hungry ghost” festival over the weekend. According to Chinese tradition, the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar is the time when the gates of hell open, allowing ghosts and spirits to visit earth. Food and other offerings are made to keep the spirits of dead ancestors happy.
![]() Buddhists and Taoists, perform rituals to honor the dead and absolve their suffering. To start the celebration, Indonesian-Chinese descents in Medan prepared offerings, such as mustard leaves and red cane. ![]() The offerings were prepared in front of this temple in Medan on Aug. 10. The two men pictured here carry an effigy of the “King of Ghost,” ahead of the celebrations. ![]() Aside from offerings, believers also burn “hell money” – fake money that they have prepared to appease the wandering spirits. ![]() In the image above, taken in a temple in Medan on Aug. 10, people throw the fake money in the air before lighting it on fire. ![]() People also make paper replicas of various items, such as televisions and cars, to be burnt to honor their ancestors’ spirits. In this picture, fire spreads through a temple complex in Medan, where piles of fake money and other paper replicas were displayed on Aug. 10. |
